All-day and half-day excursions: On the trail of Johan Thorn Prikker
Christiane Heiser accompanies single participants and groups on day tours in North Rhine-Westphalia and guides them to the highlights of Johan Thorn Prikkers’ artistic career. At the same time, they will learn much worth knowing about his contemporaries and the cultural history of the region.
Tour 1 – Thorn Prikker in Düsseldorf and Cologne
The excursion begins in Düsseldorf’s Ehrenhof, which was designed for the great GeSoLei exhibition by Wilhelm Kreis, its decoration created by modern visual artists. Then on to the Church of St. George in Cologne, redesigned in 1928 by Clemens Holzmeister, with glass windows by Johan Thorn Prikker. If requested, the excursion can include a trip to the Romanesque Church St. Remigius in Düsseldorf-Wittlaer, which was likewise redone in the 1920s and supplied with modern glass windows by Johan Thorn Prikker.
The group rate is 390 Euro. The number of participants is limited to 20. Transportation between the sites can be arranged.
Tour 2: Thorn Prikker and Neuss
Johan Thorn Prikker is closely linked to the cultural history of the town of Neuss. The priest in Neuss, Josef Geller, commissioned him in 1910 to paint the chapel of the Catholic associates’ house built by Peter Behrens. One year later, Thorn Prikker also designed the three ornamental windows. A visit to this chapel will be followed by a visit to the Church of the Three Kings. It is not only the high point of the collaboration between Father Josef Geller and Johan Thorn Prikker, but also houses masterpieces of modern stained glass in the windows of the choir and the transept. This will conclude with a visit to the collection of modern master artists at the Clemen-Sels Museum.

Tour 3: Thorn Prikker and Krefeld
Thorn Prikker and the cultural history of Krefeld are closely linked since the artist moved there from Holland in 1904 to teach at the Applied Arts School and to work together with the director of the Kaiser Wilhelm Museum, Friederich Deneken. The excursion begins at the artist’s home that Josef Maria Olbrich built in 1908 on Hüttenallee, where Johan Thorn Prikker resided for several years. The route then takes us to Krefeld synagogue built by Dirk Jost and the Reyman architect duo with reconstructed Johan Thorn Prikker glass windows (1928/2008). Next the Tavern on Hülser Berg, an outing pub in Jugendstil with the remains of Johan Thorn Prikker’s wall decoration (1905), where a short midday break is planned. Food and drink are available. To conclude the excursion, a trip to the houses of Esters and of Lange built by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. After museum renovation is completed in 2012, the possibility exists to include the former Kaiser Wilhelm Museum in the excursion and to visit the early 20th century collection at the Krefeld Art Museum.

Tour 4: Thorn Prikker and Karl Ernst Osthaus in Hagen
After a visit to the monumental glass windows “The Artist As Teacher of Trade and Commerce in Sauerland” at the main railway station in Hagen, we will visit the residence of Karl Ernst Osthaus, the Jugendstil villa Hohenhof by Henry van de Velde, and walk to the artists’ colony at Stirnband built by Johannes Mathieu Lauweriks. To conclude, a visit to the Osthaus Museum with its Jugendstil interior, which is the genesis of the Folkwang Sammlung.
